I got this recipe from allrecipes.com. Matt's work is having a contest on Friday to see who can bring the best Mexican food. Matt really wanted me to give Tres Leches a try. I was a little hesitant thinking it would be kinda gross to eat soggy, milky cake but I have to say, it is sooooooo good! I'm so glad we tried it out and it was really easy. I think we have a good shot at winning the gift card from Matt's boss. The cake is so moist and the taste is fantastic. You should definitely give this a go! I'll let you know how the contest turns out. :)
Tres Leches
INGREDIENTS
5 eggs
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 cups white sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 cups milk
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 cups white sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 cups milk
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9x13 inch baking pan.
Sift flour and baking powder together and set aside.
Cream butter or margarine and 1 cup of the sugar together until fluffy. Add eggs and 1/2 teaspoon of the vanilla extract, beat well.
Add the flour mixture to the butter or margarine mixture 2 tablespoons at a time, mix until well blended. Pour batter into prepared pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes. Pierce cake several times with a fork.
Combine the whole milk, evaporated milk, and condensed milk together. Pour over the top of the cooled cake.
Whip whipping cream, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 1 cup of the sugar together until thick. Spread over the top of cake. Be sure and keep cake refrigerated, enjoy!

I tried a tres leches cake while we were in NYC for Cinco de Mayo. It was AWESOME. Can't wait to try this recipe.
Sooooo...did you guys win?
We got second place. :( Boo hoo. Matt SAID it was because we split the vote with our tortilla soup. He was probably just trying to make me feel better though. I probably shouldn't complain since we still won a gift card. I did get the first place winner's recipe for Southwestern Eggrolls. I'll have to try them out and post the results.
I do have to say that Matt and I aren't really big cake fans but we LOVED this. I usually end up throwing away dessert leftovers because the two of us can't get through them before they go bad. I only ended up throwing away about 4 pieces of this (from a 9x13 pan). I guess Kyle did eat two pieces of it. Still, that's a record for this McGhie family
Thanks for sharing this. Mom made this for a family dinner but it ended up being a little water. She didn't have any sweetened condensed milk and made some from scratch. Not sure if that was what made it a little water. The flavor was yummy. It kind of reminded me of when my husband pours milk over his cake in a bowl then eats it. Was yours thicker than that? We are definitely going to have to try this again with the proper ingredients. Maybe I will try it for the Thomas family dinner.
Bummer about 2nd place. But at least your placed and people liked it. :)
